Caring For Your Mouth After Surgery

Proper care is vital for healing. Expect some swelling, bruising, and minor bleeding.

Peaks in the first 48 hours. Apply ice packs (15 min on, 30 min off) to the cheek.

Mild oozing is normal for 1-2 days. Apply gentle pressure with gauze or a moist tea bag for 10-15 mins. Call us if bleeding is heavy or continuous.

Brush carefully, avoiding the surgery site. Avoidelectric toothbrushes/water picks for 2 weeks. Rinse gently with warm salt water twice daily starting the day after surgery.

Take prescribed antibiotics and pain relief exactly as directed. Take with food to avoid nausea. Do not drive or drink alcohol while taking prescription pain meds.

If placed, return in ~10 days for removal (they won’t dissolve). Avoid touching the implant area with your tongue.

Start with soft foods (yogurt, soup, eggs). Chew on the opposite side. Good nutrition aids healing.

Spicy foods, carbonated/alcoholic drinks (first 24 hrs), straws (first 7 days), and smoking until healed.
